About
Purbayan Chatterjee
Belonging to the Senia Maihar Gharana, Purbayan Chatterjee was introduced to music at the age of three by his father, Pt. Parthapratim Chatterjee. Though he initially felt music kept him from sports, a recording of Pt. Nikhil Banerjee at age 12 sparked a lifelong passion for the sitar. At just 15 years old, he received the President of India Award for being the Best Instrumentalist in the country. He conceptualized the Shastriya Syndicate, the first Indian classical band to achieve worldwide contemporary acclaim. During the pandemic, he helped found the first-ever virtual live concert without latency. He is a sought-after global ambassador who frequently collaborates with jazz legend Pat Metheny, Shankar Mahadevan, and Ustad Zakir Hussain.
